Juicing is all the rage for health conscious people and a whole industry has grown up around it. There are various types of juicers but we’re looking at the two most popular:- masticating juicers vs centrifugal juicers. They both work very differently and it’s difficult to say that one is better than the other, it really depends on which type you prefer.
If you’re looking to buy a new juicer, it’s probably best to look at the pros and cons of each type before making a decision. You’ll also want to know the differences between them because it will probably affect your final choice.
We’ll take a look at two top sellers, one centrifugal and one masticating. Although each of them is very popular, there are many others to choose from. It’s not to say one or other is the best juicer on the market, but more about helping you to understand the differences and to come to a decision. Masticating juicers, which are sometimes called cold press juicers, tend to be more expensive but many people prefer the results they produce. So, what does masticating juicer mean? The word “masticating” suggests that they work by chewing the fruit. That might sound somewhat crude, but it does describe the workings quite well.
These machines mostly have a horizontal tube, with the fruit and veg placed into it through the top. It gets pushed down the tube with a screw type of auger. The blades aren’t particularly sharp, so the food gets crushed or masticated and is squeezed to separate the juice from the pulp.
There are also vertical masticating juicers but they’re not as popular as the horizontal types. They take up less space but can be more expensive than the horizontal ones and some of them can be prone to jamming if you’re not careful with them.
When looking at masticating juicers vs centrifugal juicers, you’ll notice the masticators run more slowly which means they make less noise. This is good if you live with other people and need to keep the noise down low.
Because they run slowly, many at less than 80 rpm, it means they’re able to extract more nutrients. They’re also better for getting the most juice from leafy greens such as cabbage, spinach and even wheatgrass.
There is a downside to running slowly, which is that the juicing will obviously take longer. The tube is usually fairly narrow so they don’t normally take whole fruits, they will need cutting into small pieces.
The masticating process works without allowing too much air into the juice. This means there is less oxidation, which would otherwise cause a reduction in the nutrients and shorten its shelf life.
With the masticating process creating a pulp, some of it can filter through with the juice when they get separated. This can give a slightly pulpy texture to the juice, but a lot of people prefer it this way.
Centrifugal juicers are normally cheaper and are generally more popular than masticating juicers. This isn’t necessarily because of the price or that they’re the best juicer for juicing. It’s actually the masticating ones that probably produce a better juice, but for some reason it’s the centrifugal types which have had the most limelight.
As you might expect, centrifugal force is at the centre of these machines. The fruit or veg is placed into the top of it into the mesh chamber. At the bottom of the chamber are sharp teeth or blades which cut the food to pieces.
The chamber then spins at high speed, separating the extracted juice from the rest of the food. This motion sends the juice out through tiny holes into a container, while the remaining pulp is forced into a separate container.
The force is strong as a result of the spinning which is normally between 2000 to 14000rpm. The finished results have better separated juice and pulp because of the fast spinning and centrifugal force.
Because of the high speed, it means the juicing is completed more quickly and it’s better for harder fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots. This type of juice machine can normally take a whole size fruit or veg, depending on the size of the chute. There’s no need to chop them into small pieces, which is convenient and cuts down on the time it takes to prep.
One downside of running at a high speed is that it produces more noise. This probably isn’t too much of a problem, if you want a faster result, it’s inevitable the extra speed needed will create more noise!
Oxidation happens faster too as the high speed means more air goes through the machine and then into the juice. The result is that the juice won’t last as long and is better if it’s used straight away.
There’s usually more froth because of the amount of air that gets into the juice, but this is down to a matter of taste. While the best masticating juicers can also handle leafy greens and wheatgrass, centrifugal juicers usually do it better.
Masticating Juicers vs Centrifugal Juicers Examples
Now we’ve looked at how both of these juicers work and their good and bad points, you should have some idea of the type that would be best for you. Both can give very good results, but they are different.
As with anything, you get what you pay for and there are good and bad on both sides. We’ve picked two popular models to compare, both are recommended, but they’ve been selected to give a further insight into the differences.
Here is a fairly small but sturdily built machine. The Omega J8006 Nutrition System Juicer is easy to operate and in some ways, is more than just a juicer. It isn’t one of the cheapest, but it could be said that it’s a best buy masticating juicer. As far as Omega is concerned, the J8006 isn’t at the top of their range, but it remains a very popular choice.

If you’re looking for a very simple operation, there’s no doubt that you’ll get that with the Omega J8006. It’s as easy as cutting up the fruit or veg, drop them into the top of the cylinder tank, turn it on and it’ll do the rest!
You’ve probably noticed we mentioned cutting the food up, which is necessary, but there are some masticating juicers that can take whole pieces. The motor runs at 80rpm as is typical with these types of juicing machines. Although it runs slowly, the motor is a very powerful one.We’ve already mentioned that masticators run slower than the centrifugal models, but the motor speed of this one means juicing does take a bit longer. The benefit of this is that the enzymes are protected with less air getting in. The shelf life of the juice is about 72 hours because of the lack of oxidation. The slow speed causes very little foaming or clogging and the motor doesn’t get too hot.
The food inside the chamber gets squeezed rather than ground. The fibers get chewed (masticated) which is better for drawing out more minerals and enzymes. This helps to retain a good flavor and color.
With the dual stage juicing system the fruit or veg is first thoroughly squeezed to bring out as much juice as possible. The remaining pulp is then also squeezed to get even more juice from the concentrate.
Not all other juicers also squeeze the pulp. It’s great because it forces out even more juice and it also makes the pulp very compact, which is not as messy when cleaning up. The pulp gets automatically discarded at the end of the process but if it wasn’t so compressed, there would be more of it left behind.
You get more than juicing with the Omega 8006 as it comes with additional attachments. It can operate as a food processor, it can make frozen desserts, natural baby foods and nut butters with the homogenizer attachment.
There’s a pasta nozzle if you like to make homemade spaghetti or extruding breadsticks. It’s also great for grinding coffee, spices and wheatgrass. Leafy greens such as cabbage can be juiced without a problem.
The masticating on the Omega J8006 is done by a GM Ultem auger which, according to the manufacturer, is eight times stronger than any other. In fact, everything about this Omega masticating juicer is robust and well-built. It runs fairly quietly but is heavy at 13 pounds.
The 15 year limited liability warranty is especially very good. This must show that Omega is confident of the quality and durability of this product. After all, it’s a premium item, so you’re paying a little more for it, but this shows you’re getting value for what you’re spending on it.
Make no mistake, this is a premium juicer and that does come at a price, but you are getting good value for your money. It’s very well made, you can tell it’s built to last. The quality of the juice it produces is excellent because of the way in which it extracts it.
The combination of the powerful, but slow speed motor and the dual-stage extraction ensures the juice quality. It works very efficiently by squeezing the juice out and then going back to the leftover pulp to get even more.
The Omega J8006 Nutrition System juicer is one of those gadgets that would be a welcome addition to any home, it works well, is built to last and looks great. The 15 year warranty says something about the manufacturer’s confidence behind this juicer and if you’re prepared to pay a bit more for good quality, it’ll be money well spent.
The Breville Juice Fountain Cold BJE430SIL is a little different to most other centrifugal juicers because it has technology that helps keep the shelf life of the juice similar to that of a masticating juicer. This model is more expensive than many other centrifugal juicers, but its technology is what makes it stand out.
If you’re just starting out juicing, you’ll find this machine is easy to use and it makes great juice. It also makes a lot of it, there seems to be more juice to come out than you might think is possible! Having the respected name of Breville behind it also adds to its credibility.

Probably the best feature of the BJE430SIL is the cold spin technology. This sends the juice through the micro-mesh filter and makes sure every last bit of juice is extracted without heating the ingredients.
When a motor runs at high speed and for a long time, it will obviously heat up and this can have an effect on the quality of the juice. The cold spin technology spins the ingredients at a low temperature so when it passes through the mesh, there’s very little heat transfer. The word “cold” refers to the small amount of heat transfer compared to other juicers.This technology helps to protect the delicate nutrients which might otherwise lose flavor because of the heat produced from the motor. It’s also able to extract more juice than normal centrifugal juicers.
The motor is powerful at 850 watts, it has dual processing speeds of 6500 rpm and 13000 rpm. This is designed to help with processing both soft and hard fruits and veg. The lower speed can also handle leafy vegetables, but not as well as masticating types.
Because of the high speed, quite a lot of air gets into the process, so there is an amount of oxidation. Normally juice like this would last for around 24 hours. The good thing about the way this one is designed is that the juice jug, which has a 70 oz capacity, has a sealable lid. This helps to preserve the enzymes, nutrients and minerals for longer. It also has a foam separator.
The juice should last for about 72 hours in the fridge. Normally you’d expert juice from a centrifugal machine to last much less, 72 hours is similar to that of a masticator which lets in much less air.
Despite having such a powerful motor which runs at very high speeds, it actually runs more quietly than you might expect. This is down to the design and the crafting of the components.
Centrifugal juicers normally have a wider feed chute than masticating ones. The Breville Juice Fountain Cold has a very wide 3” opening. This means you’re able to put whole fruits and vegetables straight into it and makes the whole process much quicker. Obviously, extra-large fruit or veg will need some chopping.
The pulp container is extra-large, being able to hold 3.6 qts. Because the juice container holds a lot, the pulp container needs to as well.
The Juice Fountain BJE430SIL is one of the better centrifugal juicers as it delivers juice differently to other similar models. The result is that the juice will last longer than normal, up to 72 hours. This is down to the cold spin technology and the sealable juice container.
Another good point is how quietly the motor is, even at high speeds. It’s able to handle whole fruits and veg, so the prep time is less, which is great if you’re in a hurry.
Unfortunately, there is some wastage with some fruits. It’s been reported that some of them have chunks left with the pulp. Although not a major problem, it is something to be aware of.
The warranty is only for one year which doesn’t compare at all to the 15 years with the Omega J8006. Perhaps because Breville is a well-known quality brand, it’s expected to last a long time anyway.
As mentioned earlier, masticating juicers tend to be more popular than centrifugal ones, but the Breville Juice Fountain Cold is one of the better ones, offering good quality and value.

So now you know, there are pros and cons for both types, it comes down to what you’re looking for. Masticating or cold press juicers do tend to be more expensive, but aren’t quite as good as some harder fruits or veg. The results from them tend to be better and last longer.
It’s best if you go for an established manufacturer like Breville or Omega and yes you can find much cheaper juicers than featured in this article, but remember they are precision machines, so make sure you look for good quality and durability.
