Omron 10 Series BP786N Review

You probably know that the best way to get your blood pressure checked is to go and see your doctor. There are also many reasons why you might want to monitor it yourself, so we’re looking at the Omron 10 Series BP786N to see how well it does the job.

If you have a problem with your blood pressure or you’re taking medicine to help control it, taking regular readings can help you to stay on top of how well it’s being controlled. You can also let your doctor see your record of the measurements in order to better understand, or help to control the problem.

Why Choose the Omron 10 Series BP786N?

Firstly, it should be pointed out, that if you search online for this model, you’ll find a lot of results for the BP786 yet few for the BP786N.Omron 10 Series BP786N Review 1 One reason for this is that they are both basically the same except for some minor component changes, so the manufacturer changed the model number.

There are some fairly decent blood pressure monitors on the market, but there has been a question over the accuracy of many of them. Of course, different brands will sometimes differ in accuracy, but it should be noted that according to Omron, they are the number one doctor and pharmacist recommended brand. That’s what forms the company’s marketing strapline.

BP786N Features

  • Easy wrap ComFit Cuff
  • TruRead for accurate readings
  • Large display
  • Saves 100 readings for 2 people
  • Bluetooth connectivity

One of the most common criticisms of home blood pressure monitors is their accuracy, as previously mentioned, particularly with digital monitors. The main reason for this is often a bad fitting cuff. It stands to reason that if it’s too loose or too tight, getting an accurate reading will be more difficult.

The BP786N is different because of its ComFit Cuff which can fit arm circumferences from 9” to 17”. It inflates around the whole arm to make sure the cuff is positioned correctly so that it does a correct reading. Another good thing about it is that it’s easy to fit onto your arm without having to get someone else to do it for you.

Good accuracy is also helped with the Omron TruRead Technology. This has been designed to take three readings which are one minute apart and then it calculates the average of those readings. The results shown follow the guidelines which have been set by the American Heart Foundation.

Perhaps not the most important feature, but still useful, is the large display which also has a backlight. The digits are extra-large to make reading them easier.

There’s a BP level bar, which shows your readings compared to what are considered normal blood pressure readings. This gives a clear comparison between your blood pressure and what’s considered normal. These readings are colored so you can easily, compare them.

The Omron 10 Series BP786N has been designed to support two users sharing it. Each user can store 100 previous readings which are timed and dated. You’re also able to see an eight week history of your weekly morning and evening averages.

Having this data stored can be useful to keep track of readings and, as mentioned earlier, share with your doctor. It will also alert you if it detects you have an irregular heartbeat.Omron 10 Series BP786N Review 2

The Omron 10 series wireless feature is possible because of the built-in Bluetooth Smart technology. There were some teething troubles with it, but there have been improvements. It works with most iOS and Android devices and a list of them can be found at the Omron website.

You’re able to sync your data to your smartphone by using the Omron Wellness mobile app. The details are shown as graphs and trend charts or you can see them as lists.

It’s good to store your reading history to help you get a clear overview of your blood pressure. If you keep track of your progress it can help you to manage your blood pressure and encourage you to look after your heart. Of course, you can also share your data with friends if you wish and there’s also the option to connect to the Apple Health app.

If you set up an account on the Omron website, as well as accessing your previous readings and historical data, you can take part in health and fitness challenges. This is something that can encourage you to look after yourself better.

Does it Measure Up?

If you research what you should look for in blood pressure monitoring devices, you’ll find that one of the most important things is correct cuff size. If it doesn’t fit properly, it makes it hard to get an accurate reading.

It’s probably a good idea to check with your doctor or a pharmacist which size cuff is best for you as they’ll be able to tell you, based on your arm size. The BP786N with its adjustable cuff between 9” and 17” gives a good range so it should bear able to accommodate you without a problem.

You’ll also find advice when researching, that the numbers should be easy to read. Well there’s no problem with that here, as the display is extra-large and the blood pressure level indicator with its colored comparisons, makes it super easy to see instantly.

Of course, accuracy has to be the most important thing to look out for as home blood pressure monitors are notorious for giving different readings to those you get from the doctor. Because the BP786N has an excellent cuff which inflates around the whole arm and fits properly, together with giving an average from three consecutive readings, it is very accurate.

It’s important to note, that in order to get an accurate reading, there are certain directions to follow. For example, you should avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine, smoking exercising, eating or bathing for half an hour before you take a reading.Omron 10 Series BP786N Review 3

There’s a list of quite a few other things you should or shouldn’t do before taking a reading and they’re listed in the Omron BP786N instruction manual. It would be useful to have this information to hand rather than having to look it up in the manual.

There has been some criticism of the Bluetooth connectivity but to be fair, it has improved. It seems to be with a few devices, but not for everyone.  Compatibility with other apps is limited but at least you can sync and store your results online if you want to.

Your blood pressure can be affected if you don’t keep yourself fit enough, so some kind of indication of this would make a good additional feature. Cardio training, which works the heart, can affect your blood pressure, so you might want to consider using a rowing machine, an exercise bike or even an elliptical trainer.

Whilst perhaps a little basic in function compared to some other blood pressure monitors, with the Omron 10 Series BP786N this is more than made up by its accuracy which can lack with others. You might want to get your doctor to have a look at it every so often, just to make sure it’s showing the correct results. Chances are, it will be!
