You don’t have to spend much money to keep your beard in trim if you don’t want to as we’ll show with the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman. It’s not expensive and is made by a company who have been in the hair clipper business a long time.

It was 1919 when Leo J Wahl applied for a patent on his electromagnetic hair clipper and so the company was born in Illinois. Since then the company has grown and although still based in Illinois, is now in about 165 countries worldwide.

With such a good heritage, you would expect today’s Wahl professional hair clippers to be of high standard. We’ll take a detailed look at the features of the Groomsman together with customer feedback so we can highlight the good and not so good points. As we go through in detail we hope it will help you to decide if this is the best trimmer for you, but you might also want to look at our article, How to Take Care of Facial Hair.

Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman Features

  • High precision blades
  • Six length positions with memory
  • Durable design
  • Can be either corded or cordless
  • Travel pouch included

The most important feature of any trimmer must be the blades, if they aren’t very good you’d never buy another one. Thankfully because Wahl have been around for a very long time they know how important this is. The Groomsman blades are made from high carbon precision ground steel. This is better than stamped steel and with a high carbon content it means the blades will stay sharper for longer. They are self-sharpening and each of the teeth has been individually ground.

For the beard length, the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman  has an attachment with six different length positions. You can set it to the length you want and it will remember that position for the next time you use it. They range from an eighth of an inch to half an inch in length. If you don’t want to use this particular attachment, there are three other single guide combs. These give you the options of a full or medium beard and the look of a few day’s growth.

The whole thing has been ergonomically designed with contours so it fits well into the hand and is comfortable to use. It also has soft-touch pads on the front and back for added comfort. When you’re trimming your beard, you may have to twist into some awkward positions with your hand so the way it is designed is a way to offset this. It has a durable finish with a brushed chrome handle, so it looks great too.

It can be used as either cordless or with a chord as its charging. Either way is good, the battery lasts for quite some time but if you’re using it at home in your own bathroom then plugging it in will probably be convenient. That’ll mean if you do have to take it with you when travelling, at least it should be charged and ready to use.

If you do need to take it with you when travelling, the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman does come with a travel pouch so you can keep it neatly in it. You can also keep the cleaning brush and oil that’s supplied with it, in the pouch too. A stand is also supplied so it can be kept neatly in your bathroom. The stand also doubles up as a charger.

  • Good quality blades
  • Self-sharpening
  • Well designed for comfort and style
  • Six hair lengths to choose, with memory function
  • Can be used cordless or corded
  • Charges quickly
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Amazingly low priced
  • Attachments can be difficult to fix onto the trimmer and they are quite flimsy

The blades must be the most important thing to consider and in this case with the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman, you really can’t go wrong with the Groomsman. High carbon precision ground steel is certainly the way to go for quality and with each of the teeth being individually ground that’s even better!

The quality of the steel is said to make the blades self-sharpening which is a really nice feature. You will have to oil them from time to time to make sure they’re kept in top condition. With so much effort put into the blades there shouldn’t be any problem with getting a really good trim. This is a real positive given the low price of this beard trimmer.

Design is important, so the fact that both comfort and style has been taken into consideration, is a very good thing. The soft-touch pads are a nice touch to make the whole experience better. It looks good with the brushed chrome handle, which is also shaped for comfort when using it.

The multiple setting for hair length is good, although other some models do have more than six as this one does. It might be argued that six settings are enough and having more, is a bit over the top! There has been a suggestion by some customers that the attachments are fairly difficult to fit and are prone to falling off or even breaking as they are quite flimsy, so perhaps some care is needed.

We like the fact that it can be used as either a cordless trimmer of with a cord attached to the charger. The benefit to this is that it can be used even if you’ve forgotten to charge it, as long as you have a power socket where you are!  It does charge very quickly though. Also having the stand operate as a charger is convenient.
This is a very easy to use, easy to clean and maintain trimmer. The Groomsman performs very well with a lot of satisfied customers and it’s very reasonably priced. The Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman is a versatile and reliable trimmer that has been around for quite a number of years, but still remains extremely popular and really does take some beating!
